The Clients representative approached Bartholomew Landscaping to submit a garden
design proposal for their newly built property in Rutland Gardens Knightsbridge,
London. The build of this magnificent house with two floors below ground, one being
for a swimming pool and gymnasium was over a two and half year period.
With the house build being consumed to its maximum footprint, the area left for
the garden was literally a narrow strip to the rear and side of the property.
Bartholomewʼs challenge was to create a stunning roof garden space that reflected
and complimented the quality and build of the house, which in turn could be used
in all weathers. Below the roof are residential rooms that require airflow. In order
to maximize the surface area of the space and avoid a stairwell, we designed a flush
mounted intricately laser cut stainless steel grill with walk on removable glass
roof light. The rest of the surface was finished in high quality hard wood teak
decking.
The perimeter walls were treated with slats of hard wood constructed horizontally,
interspersed with mirrors to reflect space and light. A centrally located section
of the mirror had cascading water that continued to flow through to another wall-mounted
feature below the walk on roof light benefiting the rooms below.
A fireplace, plasma TV and outdoor heaters were also installed with a fully controllable
lighting system to enhance the overall effect and create varying lighting moods
throughout the garden. An electrically operated overhead canopy was installed, to
cover the whole area transforming the space into another room that offered complete
privacy.
The planting was predominantly evergreen species chosen for contrasting foliage,
scent and texture.
