Putney Wharf is an imaginative mixed-use development of apartments, townhouses,
offices, restaurants and bars. Our task was to design and build a communal garden
in one of the courtyards for exclusive use by residents and office workers.
We took inspiration from the strong lines of the surrounding architecture and conceived
a complementary geometric scheme.
At the heart of the design is a water feature consisting of six large slate squares
laid on a level with a hardwood decking bridge and adjacent paving. Central planters
retained by low walls extend and enhance the geometry while creating an abundance
of seating opportunities.
Spectacular mature beehive topiary yews and pencil conifers were sourced from Germany
as specimen trees. In turn, evergreen and herbaceous planting in strong geometric
lines provide contrasting leaf texture, flower and year round interest.
Lighting of the water feature and specimen plants adds an extra dimension of dramatic
appeal for night-time use.
