Our clients; located in Pimlico Victoria; employed us as design and build contractors
having already obtained planning permission to create a new access to their roof
and locate a garden to be enjoyed by all the family. The new roof terrace of their
property represented a superb opportunity to create an external living space. The
house had already been fitted to a high standard and the building itself is a beautiful
Georgian Terrace.
A need for simplicity was at the heart of the brief our client wanted maximum space
for entertaining, whilst including space for enough planting to provide shelter
and enclosure. Dramatic views across the London skyline needed to be enhanced and
maintenance requirements should be kept to a minimum.
The entrance to the terrace is through a very modern looking glass roof structure
that slides back over a new stairwell and interior also installed by Bartholomew
Landscaping. To complement this and also facilitate a generous area for entertainment
we laid a beautifully carpentered timber deck using invisible fixings. New railings
were designed and installed and a skylight was included to allow light into the
bathroom below.
Continuous runs of stepped powder coated painted steel containers reflect the linearity
of the terrace architecture and decking while providing an opportunity for generous
planting. The entrance point and main seating area is covered by a light weight
pergola that is covered in trailing climbers. An additional bespoke day bed / bench
was constructed that gently sweeps up from the main deck, below the bench is used
for storage of cushions and children’s play equipment.
The choice of plants was carefully considered in light of the need for low maintenance.
Sturdy yet visually interesting plants were used. And, for the main containers,
we included Lavender and Rosemary so that their aromatic fragrances could flow around
the terrace and into the property below.
